Since 1997/98, IMAU has been operating Automatic Weather Stations (AWS) in western Dronning Maud Land, of which one is close to Wasa (AWS 5) and one is near Svea (AWS 6). The data from these stations have proved highly valuable for Antarctic climate studies,
During the 2003/04 season an automatic research station was set up in a joint effort by Sweden and Finland. Two scientific projects are also currently attached to the weather station: aerosol measurements and permafrost measurements .
The main aim of this research project is to investigate the life histories, energetics and same aspects of the biochemistry of Antarctic tardigrade populations, to reveal if specific adaptive patterns have evolved in response to the extreme climatic conditions in continental Antarctica.
This project examines the chemical signal in the surface and near-surface snow, with special focus on the sulfur compounds (sulfate and MSA- methane-sulfonate) on a small temporal and spatial scale.
